Battlestar Gita would have made more sense as a name, but Bhagavad Galactica has a nice ring to it.

This blog is written by a religious Jew with a thing for science fiction and a degree in Religious Studies. So you can guess which themes from BSG are of interest to me here.

Measure of Salvation, Part 1
Who is right and who is wrong? Who has the courage and who is gutless? And are either of those questions zero-sum in this situation?
Helo is the only one to say:

I’m talking about right and wrong. I’m talking about losing a piece of our souls. But no one wants to hear that, right?

For Helo, as for many moral thinkers, the ends to not justify the means. Of course, in Judaism, we say that if someone is coming to kill you, if you are able to kill them, you are obligated to do so. So in Judaism, at least, Helo is on the wrong side of this.
But his argument is worth hearing in the episode. Adama, it seems, is willing to go with Helo in the end.

Day 09- My favorite Cylon: Number One/Brother John Cavil
First of all, he’s Dean Stockwell. The scene where the Cavil from Galactica and Cavil that came back with the resistance fighters meet is hilarious and so perfectly acted. It cracks me up every time:
“What are you talking about? I’m not a Cylon! I’m not…” sees the other one… “Oh.”
What’s interesting is that until Cavil arrives, it’s always unclear who the villain is. Until then, there are obvious bad guys (the Cylons, though that picture begins to become complicated in “Dowloaded), but no real villain on the order of arch-villain Baltar in the original BSG.
Cavil is a great villain for this narrative because he defies the ethic of the series at ever turn. He is an unforgiving, tyrannical leader, while Adama is a forgiving, benevolent leader. Cavil also hates faith—he is sarcastic about God, while those who are saved in the series, Cylon and human alike, are the religious people.
Both Cavil and Tom Zarek treat religion like a political tool, but neither one live to see Earth. Roslin, on the other hand, sees it is a tool also, but she is a true believer as well. She reaches Earth, but dies shortly after they arrive.
He is also the most sexually perverse of the series. He is made in the image of the original Ellen’s father, but she is metaphorically his mother. He is her father/son. He wants to punish her and he hates her. But he also craves her sexually. He is one twisted dude.
He’s also hilarious.

From Eternal Return, on Wikipedia:

Eternal return (also known as “eternal recurrence”) is a concept which posits that the universe has been recurring, and will continue to recur, in a self-similar form an infinite number of times across infinite time and or infinite space. The concept initially inherent in Indian philosophy was later found in ancient Egypt, and was subsequently taken up by the Pythagoreansand Stoics. With the decline of antiquity and the spread of Christianity, the concept fell into disuse in the western world, though Friedrich Nietzsche resurrected it.

In the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, the polytheistic religion of the humans of the Twelve Colonies is centered on the belief of eternal recurrence, and the religious elements of the show frequently incorporate this idea with the scriptural phrase “All this has happened before, and all this will happen again.” The monotheistic Cylons also adhere to this doctrine and repeat the phrase as often as the humans.[20][21]
The first line of Disney’s Peter Pan is “All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again.” This line has been cited as the inspiration behind the same theme in Battlestar Galactica.

“You’re tempting Fate.”
“If I have a fate, then it is set, and thinking about it is not gonna make it happen any faster.”

Which is a statement of deep faith, flippant tone and appearances to the contrary.
Kara was a person of deep faith. In her conversation/interrogation with Leoben in “Flesh and Bone,” she believes in the cycle of time and that she is playing a part that has been played before and will be played again. Her faith is so deep and so real and she believes so much in her destiny that she is willing to simply ride her destiny to its end.

Day 07- My favorite battle: The Battle of New Caprica!
How is this even a question? Here are the reasons that this battle kicks ass:
1. Guerrilla street warfare
2. Galactica dropping like a rock through the atmosphere of New Caprica is the most epic thing that has ever happened
3. Adama’s speech when he realizes all is lost
4. How out-of-control overjoyed I was when Pegasus appears and saves everyone
5. But seriously.

Secretly On Your Side: I re-watched the Pegasus episodes (Including Razor) of BSG last night... →

Here’s the problem, the place where this assessment of Cain fails: Doing what you think is right, which is what Cain always did, is not the same as doing what is right, which Cain never did.

You can say that no one in the BSG narrative always did what was right, but Cain, when faced with the option of doing the right thing, often did flinch, despite her obsession with not flinching. She always did the intellectually easy thing. If people don’t agree with her, she shoots them. That’s not balls or courage. That’s an inability to deal with reality.

I re-watched the Pegasus episodes (Including Razor) of BSG last night and I’m becoming very aware of the fact that I am beginning to really like Helena Cain.
